The Folklore Institute, as an integral unit of the Folklore and Ethnomusicology Department, promotes research, conferences, and publication projects. Its publications include the Journal of Folklore Research, which emphasizes articles of international scope and interest, and Special Publications, which provides a flexible forum for publications of interest to the broad community of folklorists. The Archives of the Folklore Institute contain numerous field collections, primarily from the Midwest, as well as slide, audio and video tape, and map collections, copies of dissertations and theses, and primary reference works and journals. The Institute's sound and video production lab, SAVAIL, has computer facilities to enable research and pedagogical projects. The Institute invites scholars to become Visiting Research Associates on the basis of demonstrated achievement in folklore or ethnomusicology. Although these positions carry no stipend, the associates may use the resources of the library and archive collections, participate in seminar discussions, and have the opportunity to give occasional lectures.
