The Center is one of six regional centers of the National Institute for Global Environmental Change (NIGEC). NIGEC was established in 1989 to provide research support to the U.S. Department of Energy. The mission of the Institute is to support a network of research activities which focus on environmental issues related to global climate and environmental change. The DOE Global Change Research program focuses on the prediction and potential consequences of human-induced climatic change at regional and radiatively global scales, emphasizing the influence of active trace gases emitted by energy production and use. The Midwestern Regional Center operates a computing laboratory for the applications of geographic information systems (GIS) in environmental and natural resources management. GIS is a computer-based information technology designed to manage, analyze, and display spatial data.
