Common Pitfalls
back to top- TIME: Allow time for the learning curve and to follow the guidelines listed above regarding proposal submission through Grants.gov
- REGISTRATION: IU is registered in Grants.gov. Use the DUNS number of 006046700. The PI must be registered in the NIH Commons to obtain a user ID. This is the unique name entered in the field called “Credential, e.g. agency login” in Grants.gov. This field is located on the Senior/Key Person Profile(s) component of the grant application. Lack of this data will result in an error and you will have to resubmit your application.
- ATTACHMENTS: Attachments should be in PDF format. You may need to use Slashtmp to transfer large files to SRS for submission.
- ASSISTANCE: Contact Sponsored Research Services at (812) 855-0516 or resdev@indiana.edu for assistance.

NIH Electronic Submission of Grant Applications
The National Institutes of Health has put together a very informative page http://era.nih.gov/ElectronicReceipt/ for submitting proposals electronically via Grants.gov. It is highly recommended that you carefully review this information. A page on “Avoiding Common Errors” is included at the NIH site.
NIH eRA Commons
NIH has developed a system to facilitate the discrete exchange of essential information between NIH and applicant organizations. The “Commons” is a Web interface where NIH and the grantee community are able conduct their extramural research administration business electronically.
Slashtmp
Slashtmp is a service at Indiana University that allows IU graduate students, faculty, and staff to share files with IU or non-IU users via a web interface. It is particularly useful for those who want to share files that are too large to send via email. Slashtmp is intended for support of research and collaboration.
