WORKSHOPS IN THE RESPONSIBLE CONDUCT OF RESEARCH (RCR) FOR POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWS AT IU

Four workshops on research ethics and the responsible conduct of research (RCR) will be offered for postdoctoral fellows at Indiana University Bloomington in November, 2009. The workshops, described below, are free of charge. Participation in all four workshops is encouraged but not required.

All workshops will meet at the Poynter Center, 618 East Third Street, from 4:00-5:30 pm. The Poynter Center is directly across 3rd Street from the Law School.

Registration is required and space is limited.

To register:

2. Go to the Postdoc RCR Oncourse site and select the Assignments tool. To register, follow the directions on the assignments corresponding to the workshops you wish to attend.

Monday, November 2, 2009--COLLABORATION AND AUTHORSHIP

We will discuss some of the challenges that can arise in collaborative research, including ethical principles and policies regarding determining authorship credit, negotiating power relationships, and resolving disagreements. (Note: Three of the readings are only one or two pages long.)

Monday, November 9, 2009--DATA OWNERSHIP, ACCESS, AND SHARING

We will discuss ethical and technical aspects of data ownership, data stewardship, data access, and data sharing.

Monday, November 16, 2009--INTEGRITY AND MISCONDUCT

We will discuss the Federal definition of research misconduct, its implications for research practice, and strategies for coping with suspected research misconduct.

Monday, November 23, 2009--HUMAN SUBJECTS

We will discuss ethical principles that guide research with human subjects and the regulatory structure (national and institutional) intended to ensure the protection of human subjects of research.
